The Temple Israel Foundation
operates the restored Temple Israel, an 1884 synagogue in Leadville, Colorado,
as a seasonal museum dedicated to its pioneer Jewish community. We are
looking for someone to help us this summer. This is a paid position with
housing provided.
We need a person with skills in web design, some experience in general museum operations, and an interest in history. In addition to keeping the doors open from 10 to 5, Wednesday through Mondays, May 29 through September 29, the job includes acting as a docent for the building/museum, implementing our major summer project of revamping the web site, researching the local Jewish history, helping with "marketing", and a very little light curating.
Once learned, our day to day routine is pretty simple as we only average 10-12 visitors per day consuming and hour or so as we like to give them a proper tour. The rest of the time this summer should go towards the web site (www.jewishleadville.org), writing biographies of local pioneer Jews (and perhaps something about their organizations), and some organizational/promotional work. An agreeable personality helps as Leadville is a small town and this position is part of our public face. There will be erratic and inexpert supervision so a likely candidate should know what they are doing and be reasonably responsible.
In addition to pay ($1,750/mo), we offer an attached, furnished, and utilities paid curator's unit at the rear of the synagogue which includes wifi, TV with DVD (but no cable-tenant paid option), and off street parking. Leadville itself is a nice place to spend a summer with lots of outdoor sports and activities. Some people even have vacation homes up here. It's also pretty peaceful and our last "curator of collections" used her spare time to write large chunks of her doctoral dissertation.

Why I Chose This Job
The reason I selected this particular job is because I have a keen interest in coupling technology with museum studies. One of the ways to do this is by having a website that meets the needs of the museum that is represents. I find it challenging to assist an organization in defining how their goals and mission can be portrayed via their website - their window to the world. Additionally, I love research and the opportunity to investigate the history of a local community sounds like a very interesting challenge. I like the idea that it is a short term project which is the type of position that I would be looking for.- I have extensive expertise in web development and design, 15 years as a freelance graphic and web designer and my current position at CSU Sacramento as a Web/Graphic Designer.
- I have experience knowledge of general museum operations, as demonstrated through my current pursuit of a MA degree in Art Collection Management.
- I have an expressed interest in history as demonstrated through a BA degree in Art History
